That didn't used to be all that uncommon...

At least around my hometown, anyway. I remember "Fred", my dad's age, once won a trip to Hawaii OR $3,000 cash. He took the cash saying "I haven't even seen Mendota yet why would I want to go to Hawaii?". Mendota is another small town about 12 miles away.

My Dad was like that... there simply was no reason to travel because he was perfectly happy at home, (out on our farm and our neighbors' farm). I took him to Europe, lots of states, and he enjoyed it but but he was never all that impressed... until, I took him to Tombstone where his hero "Doc Holiday" has made himself known. He loved it.

And related: I have a theory that 'most' people never visit very close sites but instead travel 'away'... and I mean 'noted' places they live close to that other's travel far to see. I even did that once. I lived in Heidelberg Germany over a year, traveled all over Europe.... and one week before I came home realized I had never visited the Heidelberg Castle.. which is huge, you can't miss it.

Not related at all, but I can't resist. I was out in my front yard one day, when I was about 15, and a car pulled up and asked for directions to "Coit Ranch"... Coit is a big farm about 10 miles west of Mendota, or 25 miles or so from my home. I gave him directions.

He replied, "Listen Kid, I've been here before and I know it's right here somewhere... go get your Dad". I explained, "I know where Coit Ranch is... it's not near here, You're in Tranquillity".

He then proceeded to call me names I had never heard before. Some of the mild ones were "Idiot Kid", "dumb @#$#", etc.

So I listened, then replied, "Oh, yeah, Coit. I'm sorry... go.... (and I gave him directions)... directions that took him opposite of Coit Ranch, off pavement, and directly toward a marsh.

These days I take my kids on my ATV out where I sent him... still wild, unimproved, lot of native ground, and I always like to fantasize that one day I'll come across his car, beaten down by 50 years of Tranquillity sunshine, and his skeletal remains nearby with a Union 76 map in his now bleached white boned fingers.
