That's interesting. My wife feels the opposite. I'm not sure where I am on the subject. It's really a glass half empty v half full issue. I don't have a complete recall of stuff growing up and I'm sure its easier to remember the warm fuzzy good times which I would love to repeat. And yes there is a lot of stuff today that make me shudder and worry about what type of world my grand kids will live in. OTOH the rapid pace of science, including medicine, education, travel, entertainment gives me pause to think about what it would be like to live w/o fear of cancer, w/o fear of war, the beauty and wonder of space travel-and of course to actually know and experience the type of world my grand children will live in. So I think I join my wife in choosing the latter for the sheer joy and excitement of not knowing what lies ahead. Its kind of like "Ive been there done that-lets see what's out there and move on"
My wife made a presentation a number of years ago at MIT about the "future" of education and the significance of technology. . There were other presenters on how the discoveries in the future -and not too distant-will be so marvelous that the average person can't even imagine it today. When this very question was posed to the participants (in an effort at determining those with an optimistic or negative view of their life and future) an overwhelming number of those in attendance felt they would want to start over in the future.
One hilarious episode occurred during her presentation. She was using a power point to show some grafts (tells you how far back this was) when she wanted to make a change. So the screen displayed several options and she pointed her curser at one.Instantly the audience of engineers and students stood up in unison shouting "NO NO" . Apparently she was about to erase the entire presentation and possibly even the program itself.
In any event if you ever get a chance listen to "Ted Talk" on public radio. Many of the presentations involve what lies ahead in the future-and it really is fascinating and exciting. It just might change your view on this question..
