I'm sure the coach had to be onboard with it.. unless father and son were both lying.. Plus, wouldn't the catcher need to know what pitch was coming? Maybe not, but I always thought it helped if the catcher knew where the ball as going.. When I played in grade school we had one pitch - fastball down the middle.. nobody knew how to throw a curve or sinker or slider or knuckleball.. just heat right down the middle.. If it wasn't right down he middle, it was an accident..
