I kind of quit watching tennis late 70's.. Might have been Bjorn Borg - seem like I remember him having wicked top spin.. I remember the first key to learning top spin was that you'd hafta notice the racket handle was an octagon, not a round handle.. Normally you'd grip the racquet and the "V" between your thumb an index finger would fall directly on top to the octagon on the top flat space.. for top spin, you'd rotate your hand a tad so that the "V" actually was no on the corner of the topper of the octagon, not the flat part..
I don't actually consciously remember doing that - I just remember uncorking a swing as hard as I could with the racquet going over the top of the ball - kind of curving over the top of the ball, not hitting it flush.. That way I could totally uncork one on a frozen rope that would skim the top of the net a few inches above it, then curve downward and land in the court.. once you got to where you could jack one full steam, practically break the sound barrier with it, and have it land on or just in front of the base line, you knew you were doing good..
Friendship is like peeing your pants.. Everybody can see it, but only you can feel the warmth..
