that was definitely frustrating too, don't get me wrong, BUT when that happened they actually had nothing mathematically to play for. If it was me, I'd have definitely wanted to eliminate the Giants, but they may have actually lost their edge...I would hope that wasn't the case, but I think it could be.
McCarthy had been on the DL and had one solid start five days earlier 5 2/3 Innings 2ER 1BB 6Ks, BUT his previous 3 appearances prior to going on the DL resulted in 8 2/3IP 7H 8R, FIFTEEN walks, 5Ks.
I guess I could understand scheduling him for a simulated start out of the bullpen to try and build on his ONE good appearance in quite some time, BUT not when there was anything worth playing for. And how many relievers out of the bullpen would be allowed to face SIX hitters without getting a single out? I think they treated that Friday like a throw away game, assuming that they were going to get 1 game in the series. And to your point, with the sleeping bats, that was pretty much impossible.
