on one of the B-17's I saw over the years... Not the one my grandson's saw, I'm sure, because I would remember that.
BUT... I believe it was set up intentionally for spectators, like me.. and not at all like it would have been configured for an actual mission.
Yeah, I've been in a C-5... it is HIGH. Not the others, you lucky devil you.
Here's another amazing plane.. the C-17 Globemaster. We entered the tail and the height inside the cargo area was incredible. If you fell from the top you'd die. There was a walk way, (not sure what the correct term is), behind the cockpit and about ¾'s of the way up that ran the width of the plane.... it was like a balcony in a hotel room.
The cockpit in the C-17 is actually quite large. Or this one was, anyway... I have no idea if they are all configured the same.
Here's my C-5 Story... once I was coming in for landing at Fresno Air Terminal... I had my son with me and we were in a very small Piper Tomahawk... low wing two seater. When I turned onto the downwind leg of my landing pattern I saw a C-5 on the runway, taxiing. I tapped my son and told him to take a look, dipping the wings so he could see better.. it was HUGE, looked like it was 20% of the entire runway. As we were watching it 'taxiing' it's nose suddenly came up and to my utter amazement it lifted off. It wasn't taxiing at all... it was taking off... it was just SO HUGE that you couldn't really detect much motion... not fast motion anyway. It was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen... this was from 800' above the runway so we had a good close view. - JamesJM
