Anyone ever have a disc replaced?

I just found out I need to have the disc between C3 and C4 replaced with an artificial disc.. They might need to replace C4 and C5 as well.. Only problem is this neurologist told me replacing C3/C4 comes with significant risk of damaging vocal chords and/or the ability to swallow.. if he damages either of those nerves I won't be able to swallow or talk normally..

So, a little freaked out.. I thought they'd just go in and shave the disc bulges down.. apparently not.. Plus I'm gonna get a nice two inch scar across the middle of my throat for the trouble.. So, anyone have C3/C4 replaced and have any issues?
