The mega contracts are because of the cap flying through the rook. Imagine if the NFL cap went from 155MIL to 220MIL over the course of two years. We'd see the same crazy deals. They have to spend the money or they get penalized.
I kind of agree with you about superstars going where they want, but it doesn't always work out the way it seem like it will. Super teams have failed as often as they have succeeded. I looked on the web a little and found these articles, you'll enjoy them except for the Lakers team that Malone joined. I hated seeing that azz in a Laker uni. Then they did it again with Nash and Howard. The Celtics had a Big Three that only got them one title. The The Rockets did it too and failed. More often than not these teams under perform. As far as Durant's "legacy" if they don't win it all he'll be pointed to as the reason, it'll be on him. Then the Warriors have to make some decisions because they have contracts coming up.
There's a reason the saying
"there's only one ball" exists haha.
Article OneIf you google NBA super teams failure you'll see lots of stuff........
As far as viewership/ratings the NBA had a couple of off years (many say because of the lockout) but it's back on an upswing now and the Warriors are part of that. So is the epic finals we saw this year, this was the most watched since forever. Game 7 was the highest rated NBA game ABC has ever had. People are watching..........and this year with what the Warriors did and how the season unfolded and Durant putting on the black hat I think more will watch. Just like the entire nation wanted to see the Heat lose. People tune in for that stuff.
Your last point is SO obvious that after reading it I cannot now understand why the NBA didn't do exactly what you said. Same money but spread it out over a few extra years. Greed maybe? Getting the money up front versus over a few more years isn't that big of a deal to the owners I wouldn't think. It would have been better to do that.
I think you are right they will modify their agreement (players and league) to help competitive balance. The NBA doesn't have parity to the degree that it should have.
I like talking hoops, especially with someone like you who really is a fan of the sport.
Did you have a chance to see Kobe's acceptance speech at the ESPY's? I didn't see it live but it's out there, Google it, he was actually funny for a minute.
