In about an hour, me and my two boys are leaving for the LSU / Gator game. It does not start till 3:30 but I want to take the boys to lunch in Ocala, Florida...about 45 min/ 1 hr South of Gainesville. I want them to eat at Fat Boys BBQ. I have always mentioned that place to them but they have never been. Fat Boys goes back to June 1974. I had JUST turned 7 years old when my family went to Disney for the first time. The day before, we stopped in Ocala to go to the Western theme park...Six Gun Territory. It had a few rides and a real Western town with gun battles and such. Six Gun closed around 1984 and was torn down in 1986. It was simple but really cool. Before Six Gun, we stopped at Fat Boys. Back then, I did NOT eat. I liked NOTHING! LOL But that was THEEE best BBQ pork sandwich I have ever had. Even my Dad raved about it. For years...DECADES afterward, till he passed, my Dad and I would use Fat Boys as the measuring stick for BBQ sandwiches. Thought about that place but never returned till I took my Wife there 4 years ago. It was wild.......The SAME sign by the street......The SAME interior. And what really surprised me....My Pork sandwich was AWESOME! That trip 44 years ago was my favorite family trip. I still remember my Brother showing me "the cool stuff" at Six Gun. He had been there before. I still even remember driving down HWY 301 to get there that day. Then and now, I have always loved the trip down 301. IT'S FLORIDA!! Almost no strip malls, cookie cutter / CRAP modern neighborhoods. With my Mom, Dad and Brother gone, trips like today are even more special. So today's theme is BBQ / Six Gun memories and then GOOOOOOOO GATORS!!
