Every so often I'll read a novel and the level of intelligence of the author floors me... I can't imagine how they can be so smart.
Some years back I mentioned the author Umberto Ecco... the man is not of this world, can't be, far too intelligent. When I read his books I'd have to pause every sentence and refer to a dictionary. Just finished another book like that... but this one not by Umberto:
This was titled, "A Canticle For Leibowitz" by Walter Miller Jr. I don't think he quite comes up to the cerebral level of Umberto but he's so far ahead of me that when I finished the book I went into deep depression knowing that in my lifetime some people solved the most complex issues facing mankind while I will most likely pass to the next life having as my life's greatest achievement figuring out my microwave oven.
I'm on a reading binge, by the way - - - and loving it. Got away from reading for a while... well, not entirely, but certainly well below my normal yearly average. Kind of turned that around starting about a year ago, or a little more. Didn't start with Umberto, however. Or Miller. Read a couple Agatha Christie's, (or re-read that is)... also some Louis L' Amour. Books I can get thru in a couple nights. They didn't require a dictionary, (well, not often anyway). Moved on to some new Sci-Fi which I was NOT fond of.
This Christmas past I re-read "Lord Of The Rings".... that's tradition for me, EVERY Christmas season I re-read it.... and it gets better every read. About to start the Harry Potter series ALTHOUGH... not really sure I'll finish them all... as much as I love Harry Potter I'm just not into it the way I am with Lord Of The Rings.
So anyway... any good recommendations, books you've read recently, or long ago, that you like? I think the last books I read on 'recommendation' were suggested to me by Les. It was called "Riverworld"... a splendid read, very imaginative. - JamesJM
