because I know for sure I have told this before on this board. Inspired by the Party Album Thread...
Gary is in my band. Gary is Western... to the bone. Only really knows western music... but, as anyone has, been exposed to rock, pop.
He was in the first band I put together after getting out of the Army, 1973. "The Mountain Oysters".... to this day my favorite name for any band I was ever in... or any band ever, for that matter.
In the very late 70's Gary moved to northern Ca., bought a cattle ranch. Sold it in the 90's and bought a "Dude Ranch" in northern Ca. Early, maybe mid, 2000's he came home. By then I had started several bands.. "Buckskin"... from 1980 to 1995... today "Panoche Creek". When Gary came home we invited him to join.
He did.
Gary had been in the band for several months when one night at a gig we were maybe 5 hours into a gig when we stopped and did what we usually did - argued about what song we should play next. Three of us went back and forth, arguing, when Gary offered an opinion. At this time Gary didn't know our song list well.
Gary, "Play that Diddly Eye song".
Well, we just stared at each other.... the rest of us that is. "What in the living HELL is the Diddly Eye Song"?
"Gary", we asked, "What in the hell are you talking about?"
Gary, "You know, you play it every gig. diddle eye diddle eye diddle eye".
That didn't help. Gary had lost his mind... well, Gary never really had a mind so that's not accurate.
I have to confess that it wasn't me that finally figured it out. It was our lead guitar player.
What Gary was thought we were saying was "Diddle eye" but actually it was: "didn't I Didn't I Didn't I". got it?
"I want you to want me"... Cheap Trick.
"didn't I didn't I didn't I see you crying".
To this day, that happened some 10, maybe 15 years ago, we call that song "Diddle Eye".
