I am a big proponent that the lack of the deep ball is one of if not the biggest issue with our offense. Was playing around looking at Isaac Bruce stuff--because life doesnt get better than Isaac Bruce.
In 1999, in the first quarter alone, Bruce caught 10 passes for 20+ yards.
In 2019, Goff completed 17 passes for 20+ yards the entire season.
In 1999, Bruce had 24 for the season.
Thought that was a pretty interesting stat.
And one difference between 99 and 2019 when it comes to that, is this. In 99 one O-lineman (Nutten) missed two games. That was it for OL disruption during the year.
In 2019, the tackles started the season off playing poorly and they had newbies on the inside. In the end, because of injuries, 10 different O-linemen took game snaps. The 2 O-linemen who played the most games, AW and Blythe, both had off-season surgery, and who knows how long they were playing hurt. They ended the season with an OL that included 3 inexperienced injury replacements, 2 of which were rookies.
As a rule, if you have a qb who has done well before but the passing game has issues one year, you always want to start by looking at the OL.
