Iirc didn't he announce on Instagram that he was coming back for another year?

Which seemed to suggest it was a last hurrah, but obviously not.

One thing I do know though is this.

He must really believe in McVay and Goff because he's not coming back thinking he's going 8-8.

... I think he really enjoys playing with and for these guys. Every time I see/read an interview I get the sense that he REALLY enjoys his job and his relationships. And, of course, once it's over it's over. He can doubtless get a coaching gig if he wants one, but that's not quite the same.

And one more thing: maybe they asked him to stay. My guess is that his decision to stay has much less to do with his thinking the team has a chance to make a deep playoff run and much more to do with his body cooperating with him, continuing love for the game and this team, and the near-certainty that this OL and team will be better with him that without him.
