Intersting to know about McDaniel as he was in McVay's footsteps

January 26, 2020 09:41AM
That was a good catch Ohioram. It is interesting to know about McDaniel. He may ascend in the coaching ranks somewhere. He was not on my radar. He did get an NFL Head Coach interview 3 weeks ago. (article below) as well as OC interest. (Cardinal were denied an interview last year, & the Broncos considered him as OC in 2017).

Both McVay and McDaniel coached in the united football league in 2009. McVay became the Washington Redskins in Offensive assistant 2010. McDaniel became the Washington Redskins in Offensive assistant 2011. McVay was promoted to the Washington Redskins Tight ends coach (2011–2013). McDaniel was promoted to the Washington Redskins WR Wide receivers coach (2013). They both of course went onto larger roles with more successful NFL teams.

Browns to interview Mike McDaniel, Mike LaFleur for head coaching vacancy, report says
Cleveland adds to San Francisco assistants to their pile of interviews

The Cleveland Browns are expected to interview San Francisco 49ers passing-game coordinator Mike LaFleur and run-game coordinator Mike McDaniel this weekend, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. LaFleur's interview has been set up for this weekend during San Francisco's playoff bye. An interview date with McDaniel has not yet been set up.

The Browns are off and running in their search for a new head coach. Seven potential candidates are already expected to interview:

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels
San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh
Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll
Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman
San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur
San Francisco 49ers run game coordinator Mike McDaniel
Baylor head coach Matt Rhule declined the chance to interview with Cleveland, per Schefter.

LaFleur, 32, is the younger brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. He has spent the last six years working with 49ers offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, including as an offensive intern with the Browns in 2014.

McDaniel, 36, is a graduate of Yale. His career began as a coaching intern with the Denver Broncos in 2005. He has worked with Shanahan every year since the 2011 season with the Washington Redskins.

Ownership announced their decision to fire head coach Freddie Kitchens Sunday after a 6-10 season with the team. Expectations were high entering the season and the team did not live up to them. The path was lined with several on-field miscues and a lack of overall discipline. As of now, it appears that the team intends to keep general manager John Dorsey.

The Washington Redskins are expected to hire Ron Rivera to serve as their next head coach, which leaves the Carolina Panthers, New York Giants and Browns with openings. The Dallas Cowboys are expected to join the equation but a decision has not yet been announced.

49ers run-game coordinator Mike McDaniel receiving coordinator interest from NFL teams; Cardinals denied request to interview

The San Francisco 49ers have already fired head strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright and lost defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley, who left for Ohio State to serve as the football program's co-defensive coordinator.

Could the 49ers be preparing to lose another assistant coach?

Multiple teams are expressing interest in 49ers run-game coordinator Mike McDaniel, according to a report from former NFL wide receiver Andrew Hawkins, who played for McDaniel for one season with the Cleveland Browns.

Andrew Hawkins

@Hawk
Hearing multiple teams have inquired about 49ers Run-Game Coordinator Mike McDaniel for OC.

I played one season under Mike, & if they want an “offensive guru”, Id bet ever dollar in my account that no other candidate understands offensive football the way he does. EVERY. DOLLAR.

McDaniel, who finished his second season with San Francisco and works with running backs coach Bobby Turner, served as the 49ers' run game specialist in 2017 and run game coordinator in 2018. He came from Atlanta, where he worked two years with then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as an offensive assistant. Before then, McDaniel served as the wide receivers coach for both the Browns and Washington Redskins.

The 49ers rushed for a combined 1,902 yards in 2018, which ranked No. 13 in the NFL.
