So $7-8M is your ballpark, dz? Okay.
I could see Snead maybe going for that.
Myself, I’d prefer to just move on from Whit and devote those cap dollars to other areas.
Unless Snead knows that Boom’s return is gonna be greatly delayed, AND no one on the roster can handle the LOT job even for a few games, AND no one looks appealing in either FA or the draft?
Fair enough. There's definitely more than one way to approach it.
I envision that the other guys on the roster that can temporarily handle the LOT job - Evans and Edwards - will have starting jobs at other positions. Which leaves Noteboom.
For me, Noteboom is a big question mark. Who knows if his return will be delayed. And with him, I know that he's looked better in limited snaps at OT, but given his awful performance this year at LG, I have performance questions with him too.
Couple the injury question mark and my performance questions and I really don't want to see him be plan A. I'm fine with him being Plan B and forcefully taking the job from the aging Whit. Given my concerns with him taking over the most important OL position right out the gate, I wouldn't hesitate to pay $7-$8M in insurance to make sure that the LOT position is handled.
As for free agents and the draft, I don't see any FA that look appetizing. I didn't like the options in the article more than simply going with Whit for one more year. And the draft can't be Plan A either because Snead states EVERY year that he doesn't like entering the draft with acute needs. IMO, that modus operandi is extremely wise.
