It was a mistake, Rams did not want to sign guys to their last contract, but they did not realize that Saffold was the linchpin and that Noteboom is a better tackle than guard like Saffold is a better guard then tackle. Overall, I'm sure Snead would like a do over.
I hate hard fast rules like "dont sign guys to their last contract".
Reminds me of their old rule of dont draft Safeties in the first round that kept them from drafting Polumalu.
The other thing here that they got wrong was thinking that an exposed OL in the SB would be fine by losing its best interior lineman, a savvy vet who was the first pick in the 2nd round, and replacing him with an unknown 3rd round OT. It was such flawed thinking. They were so lucky with injuries to their OL for 2 years, and they were blind to think the results were sustainable.
My view is that Snead is a wildman and is willing to roll the dice on stuff. Who knows what Kromer told him and how much leverage he had in the decision. I would think McVay went along with them, but I doubt he's so trusting now. Clearly, I hold McVay in higher regard than Snead or Kromer, and I expect him to take a much less risky approach to the OL going forward.
There is no way, none, where that decision can be made without full and complete complicity from McVay. There's no logical way to construe it where he is this innocent bystander.
Judging how Kromer kept saying that the new OL would take a while to get it together, sounds to me like he knew full well that losing Saffold would be a problem.
And remember what they did with the money. That was Weddle and Matthews, basically.
....
It wasn't about Mathews and Weddle....it was more about Fowler vs Saffold imo.
They thought they had better depth at OL than they did at pass rusher I'm guessing
Why is it about Fowler and Saffold?
As I just said, they could sign both if they used the money they gave to Weddle and Matthews.
Thinking you have depth isn't as important as keeping key starters.
I mean they know they have Hill, Ramsey, Williams, and Robey-Coleman but you don't see them rushing to dump one.
I just think they completely underestimated Saffold's importance to the line and I think they figured age was an issue. If so they were wrong on both counts.
