I'm asking everyone who I discuss this with, how much better? IMO, the OL was better but it still was, meh...average at best. I think we all just got excited because it was no longer horrible like the first half of the season.
And IMO, average is not enough if we want a top performing offense.
I totally agree with you. They went from really bad to average. And they should demand better. It's going to be really hard to jump back up to being a top-3 OL like they were in 2017 and 2018. But I would say that if they have an even average OL in 2020 (16th? 17th? etc.) combined with not playing one of the league's 2 hardest schedules that could/should have them playing in January.
Maybe they can revamp the OL in one offseason. Heck, they did it between 2016 and 2017. But it's a tall order.
There are different opinions on this but I don't think it has to be an elite OL. And depending on who;s available, it can be done overnight--happens all the time in the league. Look at the last SF game. They had it tied against the league's #2 defense, with an OL that while decent and fairly solid was not a top OL. That's what I expect to see and I think it can happen in one off-season.
