article and explanation for Gurley's use makes no damn sense

I actually think whats has changed is the Rams blockng scheme which they don't even mention

Even with improved blocking Gurley is more OJ Anderson than "Gurley"

Which is a big deal on a offense built around big gashing runs and PA passing

Something is going on with McVay

Though statistically not his best game, Goff played his best game EVER as a professional in January when he led the team to the NFC Championship. On the road...no rushing attack...can't hear himself think...matched up against a HOF QB. And he won.

I came away from that game thinking that Goff had just made the leap from a good top-12 QB...to a very good top-5 QB. I was that impressed.

I don't think that I was the only and I'm not talking about other fans. I think that Sean McVay thought so too and, beginning with the Super Bowl, began to shift the focus of the offense away from a healthy (and effective) Gurley to Goff. Well, we saw how that turned out then and through most of this season. Goff's performance in that NFC Championship game was nothing more than a flash in the pan that hasn't been duplicated since (though I'd accept an argument that the Seattle game this year was close).

In large part, Goff needs EVERYTHING around him in order to be effective (i.e. strong rushing attack; play-action; strong O-line play across the board; good WR play; and, good offensive play-calling). Top-5 QB manage to be consistently effective without all of those things being present.

For whatever reason, McVay has been very slow to recognize this. As a result, the offense has floundered with an underutilized (and healthy) Gurley.

Yes, I give some credit to Bellichick for the Patriot defense in the Super Bowl...but not all of it. McVay helped alot by unilaterally tying his own hand behind his back.

Maybe he (McVay) realizes this. Maybe.

I don't think he needs everything around to be effective..... we saw the NFC championship game, he was what got us back in that game and ultimately to the Super Bowl as you pointed out as one of his best games.... He also set an NFL record this year for completions in a signal game and 500+ yards when the running game and o-line were non existent this year in a loss to Tampa Bay...What he does need, as most pocket QB's need, is protection. He has shown many times what he can do when he is well protected Brady, Rodgers, etc have shown that they have had plenty of bad games when things around them are failing.

So to be clear...my comments aren't so much directed at Goff's perceived/real limitations. Rather, they're directed at McVay and his decision to voluntarily go away from the formula that essentially got the team to the Super Bowl. Thereafter, why did it take him so long to realize that his QB and offense weren't producing the same as the previous two seasons - and that it likely had something to do with him failing to utilize the player who actually makes his offense run?

I think it had more to do with a young unproven o-line going against some pretty good defenses early on and an ineffective running attack.....the Steeler game is really my only gripe about McVay and his lack of awareness of how well Gurley was running in that game when he decided to take him out inexplicably. He's owned that mistake and has learned from it.

The other losses TB and Balt were more defense related, the Seattle loss was a missed kick, the Niner loss Gurley was out with injury.
