I took my post from the NFL playbook

Which seems to indicate that a player doesn't have to slide feet first.
The playbook does mention the QB sliding but states the player is down where the slide starts.
Seems a player can go to the ground and voluntarily stop advancing and be called down, but when the ref would blow the whistle is another matter.
