I don't have a problem with anything you said but I think we have drifted away from my original point. Which is this:

When you see Cooks wide open on a play are you more likely to think ...

a.) Goff missed a wide open Cooks.
-or-
b.) Cooks was wide open, but I have no idea if he was a decoy or perhaps the 3rd or 4th option on this particular play.

I'm a 'b'. I think you are, too. That's really all I was getting at.

I don't have any problem with people saying he missed a wide open Cooks. Saying he was a decoy sounds to me like an invented excuse. No one has any idea if McV even does that on plays. I don't know why he would set up a guy as a decoy only and tell the qb to effectively ignore him and then in the 2019 off-season work on going through progressions more effectively and quickly.

And besides even if he did use decoys saying Cooks is wide open could just as easily be the defense figuring out he's a decoy and ignoring him. Which for all we know means that the whole decoy thing, IF they even do it, is just not a good idea.

So no I don't buy it. cool smiley

...

When I played wide receiver many moons ago (granted, this may not apply today, or with McVay), we certainly had plays where I was a decoy on the play or another receiver was. Whether McVay employs that type of strategy I couldn't say so you could be 100% right...or not. Logically I think I would agree with you because I think it limits options. For me, my answer is...I don't know.

Funny note: I remember one play where I was supposed to run a corner route as a decoy but I ran a post instead because I wanted to be in on the play. The QB saw me open and threw it to me. I caught the ball and fell over the goal line for a TD, which ended up being the winning score. But when I ran back to the sideline all happy, the head coach got in my face about running the wrong route!

Did you have an experienced pro qb whose job it is to see the field?

Or a younger qb who would benefit from being told to look at only certain options on a play?

....

My post was mostly anecdotal and as I said I think I would agree with you so I don't get your questions in response. Moving on...

I just misread you is all. Mea culpa.
