Pro Football Focus ranks Rams' run defense as 2nd-worst in NFLBy:Andrew Ortenberg
The folks over at Pro Football Focus recently ranked all 32 run defenses, and the Rams checked in at 31.
Run defense is more about having few weaknesses than it is about having playmakers. So even the Rams have one of the NFL’s best disruptors against the run in Aaron Donald, they are a liability to get gashed this upcoming season. Dante Fowler (61.2), Cory Littleton (42.1), Samson Ebukam (67.1), Michael Brockers (68.2) and Clay Matthews (64.3) are all coming off rough seasons in run defense.
At least the Rams can take solace in the fact that two division rivals, the 49ers and Cardinals, were ranked 32nd and 30th, respectively. The run defense might be somewhat of a concern, but it’s hard not to feel like PFF’s ranking is a bit harsh.
As they point out, the Rams still have the league’s best defensive player who can eat up blocks in the running game like nobody else. The Rams signed Ndamukong Suh last offseason to play next to Donald, and he was a bit of a disappointment. This past April, they drafted defensive tackle Greg Gaines to help replace Suh, who walked in free agency.
