I went to a game once at the Coliseum where at halftime they introduced some of the old Rams-players like Towler, Younger, etc. To a person they were either in wheel chairs, canes, whatever. Later that night I saw them interviewed on tv and they each spoke of arthritis. However, I'm sure that surgical procedures, rehabilitation, medicine, etc have improved significantly since those guys played.
Either way that kind of long term arthritic condition is not what Gurley's dealing with.
He has a wear and tear condition which can flare up with pain and inflammation to the point where he has to sit.
The trick in managing his knee is to avoid that. Otherwise he can play.
But when it comes to the longterm version, yeah every player on the field potentially faces that.
It is probably true that it's all managed better now--again, Faulk and Holt and Farr get around okay and all 3 left the game because of knee issues.
