Off the top of your head how many plays can they run out of their 11 personnel? Is it 100? 200? more?
The point is if the league is truly catching up with McVay's offense perhaps part of the reason is the Rams have become predictable in what they run in specific down/distance situations. A little self scouting to identify and then change those tendencies would go a long way to keeping the defense off balance.
If the Rams run off right tackle on 3rd and 3 a lot doing so out of 12 personnel instead of 11 personnel probably won't accomplish a lot.
That being said, using more personnel groupings seems like a great way to utilize all the talent the Rams have accumulated on offense and to be honest it's probably the best way to get everyone involved.
What I would like to see from the Rams' offense this year, in no particular order:
- Rely on 11 personnel less in order to get the most out of Gurley, Henderson, Woods, Cooks, Kupp, Reynolds, Higbee, Everett, etc.
- Self scout and adjust to any patterns that emerge in order to minimize their predictability.
- Use sight adjustments so the offense can adjust to what the defense is actually doing instead of what it looked like they were doing pre-snap.
