The Los Angeles Rams have gone mostly outside the box in the past few years, from hiring the youngest head coach in NFL history to almost exclusively using 11 personnel on offense. They also went unconventional with their most recent hire this offseason, bringing Zac Robinson aboard as an assistant quarterbacks coach.

Robinson doesn’t have any professional coaching experience and instead made a living as an analyst after his playing days as a quarterback were over. He was one of Pro Football Focus’ lead quarterback analysts as recently as last year.

Now a coach, Robinson has enjoyed the transition from the film room to the sidelines.

“It’s awesome,” Robinson said, via J.B. Long of the Rams’ official site. “I’m learning so much from all these guys. Playing a lot of catch-up, learning the offense, trying to get to a level of ownership. The culture of this place is pretty special; it’s unlike any place I’ve ever been.”

As an assistant QBs coach, Robinson will obviously be working closely with Jared Goff. He’s watched him from afar as an analyst, but seeing Goff up close and personal is a different viewpoint.

Robinson loves what Goff has put on tape thus far and believes he still has plenty of room to grow.

“I’ve always been such a fan of his game, dating back to college,” Robinson said. “Seeing him grow in the NFL, he’s obviously so talented. Seeing the way he works up close… You never really know until you see a guy. Seeing his attention to detail and how fundamentally sound he is every single day, and how competitive – and how he likes to work – it makes sense why he’s had so much success, and why he’s going to just keep getting better.”

This offseason, Goff has been working on going through his progressions more quickly. That’s an important aspect of playing quarterback, helping find the open receiver faster rather than holding onto the ball for too long – something Goff does more than he should.

Robinson will work with him on that, along with several other things. One transition Goff has to get acclimated to is the switch from John Sullivan to second-year center Brian Allen. Robinson says Goff has “already taken a lot of ownership in terms of protections” and that the two have meshed well in the early goings, which is crucial to the success of the Rams offense.
