I do agree that ‘16 was never just about one thing for Goff.
But I do believe that Goff suffered from a lack of competent coaching, as well. With better coaching Goff could have produced better results.
The kid never had a chance.
I don't buy that. His passing game coordinator in 2016 is now the Eagles offensive coordinator. The Eagles don't seem to be worse off for having that guy as their coordinator. Contrary to a lot of takes on this, Boras was not the passing game coordinator in 2016. That was Groh, as I said.
The problem with a team losing (besides the losing) is it leads to weaker historical understanding of what happened, since sometimes people are tempted to just do "blame someone" and leave it at that. I try not to do that.
When Goff started out in 2016, he looked promising, and so did the passing game. But things quickly caught up with them. No running game, OL out of sync, the defense eroding game by game, and a rookie qb from an Air Raid system...at a time when no Air Raid qb had ever made it as a full-time franchise starting qb in the NFL (and that's going back to the 90s).
The fact of the matter is, though, McVay did NOT inherit a rookie qb. Goff went through rookie woes and development in 2016, which means McVay inherited a more experienced qb. So I have never bought the line that 2017 was Goff's "real rookie year" and he went into it offering nothing from the start. To me that defies common sense...and doesn't account for all the facts.
In fact in 2016, I was one of the ones pointing to Goff's strengths as a player. I never wavered on the guy. I was into Goff just before they drafted him all the way through to now, without doubts. (Which does not mean I think he has reached his ceiling yet or that he doesn't have things to work on.) You could see, even in bad circumstances, what Goff brought as a qb, even in 2016. In fact even in the 2016 pre-season.
