Yeah, a thought. A lot of league analysts don't believe the 18 game thing is real. They think it's a tactic the league uses in negotiations. The league then says to the union, okay you don't want 18 games, what will you give us in return. I've seen several guys who say that's what's really happening with this.

Do NFL owners want 18 games? To a degree, yes. Do they want it bad enough to put a real proposal on the table, such as a shorter vesting time to retirement? No. It’s really more of a ploy at this point. When the players refuse, the owners say, “Then what else will you give us?”

NFL back to CBA negotiating tactic used in 2011: float idea of 18-game schedule, get strong pushback from players (and media), then look reasonable backing off it while subtly gaining other concessions.
