OTOH, there are QBs like Winston and Mariota who may not get big 2nd contracts with their current teams, and it has much to do with spending money wisely. The cap does play into these decisions along with performance. For example, Winston or Mariota may play pretty well this year, but maybe not well enough for their teams to invest big money in them. They may get the Bortles treatment or get let go all together.
Yeah, whenever I talk about qb 2nd contracts, I say it's about starting caliber qbs and whether or not you want to retain your guy or start over. I might as well say, the major 2nd contracts are for franchise qbs (franchise just meaning a guy you want to keep and keep building around). But it is entirely possible you may not see your qb that way. You call that "the Bortles treatment."
Thats really the question here.
Does Goff get the Bortles treatment? I think that is what Florio is implying. Whether he is truly sincere about it, I dunno, but Florio is saying he wouldn't be surprised if Goff got the Bottles treatment.
I'm not sure how anyone can make a case that Goff has not performed well above Bortles in Jax.
But remember "the Bortles treatment" is just a name for something. It's not literal. It doesn't mean your numbers have to be identical to Bortles. It just means you have doubts about continuing with that guy.
Florio is basing his stuff on a couple of things. One is, the Rams production is McVay not Goff. Like it or not a lot of people still think that. The other is, Goff is not McVay's guy, McVay did not draft him. I personally don't buy that but whatever.
And again, perceptions work a certain way. Goff's last 2 games of the season were Atlanta one year and New England the next. Many are going to believe what they saw in those games and put it all on Goff. To THEM he is another Winston/Mariota.
Of course Florio is sincere. There is such a thing as mistaken analysis. One of the worst things about the net is people accepting their own opinions so deeply as "the truth" that they see alternative opinions as coming from bad motives. So, since what my eyes tell me is so true it can't be doubted, this guy's different view is so unreal that he must be making it up for bad reasons. It's just another form of saying my opinion is truth, as opposed to saying there are different opinions on this naturally, but I stand by mine.
Everything I just said is completely true.
Yuck yuck.
Meaning, of course it's just an opinion but I stand by it.
....
First off, there is no way you know absolutely that Florio is sincere. You just don't know for sure. Its like would you bet your life that anyone you don't know personally is sincere about anything they say? I appreciate that you believe he is sincere, but just as much as I believe others believe he isn't.
And the numbers do mean something. I don't care who the coach is, they just don't take any average QB and make him a 100 rating QB. And Goff has been over 100 rating since his 2nd year in the NFL when he was 22 years old. If that's what someone is assuming McVay can do then they are delusional, assuming they are sincere.
