Regarding taking the best player--my point might be better communicated by saying best player over lesser player at a need position. I don't mean go get the highest rated guys regardless of draft capital cost. Just don't take a lesser player at the same draft slot because of current roster conditions.
Qb is a great example where having anything adequate is of massive value to your team. But that's mostly because the QB position is 10x? more important than any other position in terms of contributing to winning games. Personally, Im surprised teams don't draft Qbs every year. Like a Will Grier this year--if he has a 25% chance of becoming an above average QB that is well worth a 2nd round pick.
Let's agree 20 mil per year is a star--Frank Clark type player. For 20 mil this year you could have signed Saffold and Earl and Terrell Suggs. Not long term but let's just look at one year. Does the one star or the 3 lesser stars contribute more to you winning? That is the question the needs solving imo. Where is that line where money is better spent on volume or better spent on quality?
