The Los Angeles Rams spent their second-to-last pick of the 2019 NFL draft on safety Nick Scott out of Penn State, who took an interesting path to the league. He was a high school athlete who played everything from running back to cornerback, and arrived in Happy Valley as a tailback his freshman year.
Here are three things to know about the new Rams safety.
Former running back and cornerback
Scott didn’t go to Penn State as a safety recruit. He played several positions in high school – including quarterback, running back and on defense – and was darn good at every spot. He was a top-100 running back recruit out of high school, scoring 25 total touchdowns as a senior. He rushed for 1,582 yards and threw for 511 yards his final season at Fairfax High School.
When he arrived at Penn State, he was a running back initially. He rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown as a freshman, catching one pass for 4 yards, too. Scott played cornerback as a sophomore before transitioning to safety the following year. He had just one year of starting experience at safety, but it was enough to get him drafted.
Allowed a passer rating of 39.2 last season
Scott may have only been a starter for one season, but he was solid in 2018. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed a passer rating of just 39.2 when targeted. You don’t have to be a football junkie to know that’s a good number. He picked off three passes and had one pass defensed with a fumble recovery.
Special teams captain
Scott only became a starter in 2018 but he was a contributor for the three years prior. He was a special teams ace and a captain on that squad, even winning the Captain’s Award his senior year.
Special teams coach John Fassel is already a fan of Scott, saying he’s one of his favorite special teams players ever.
