I think the hope would be that in year 2 a 6th round pick like Joseph would mature into a rotational player on the defensive line. If he becomes a rotation player of good quality he is a major find in the 6th round. I agree though we need more DL depth but signing a big name isn't going to happen.
I think what happened in the 2018 draft is, coaches had a heavy hand in it, and they hand-picked guys to develop. I'm not writing Snead out of this---he has to come up with the options, and have an idea what rounds they would be available in. Kromer had a big say in Noteboom, Allen, and Demby. Same with Wade and the position coaches when it comes to Franklin-Myers, Kiser, and Sebastian-Day.
In terms of a 6th round NT panning out, that's not this wildly unlikely thing some are trying to suggest. And 2018 was an unusually deep draft. A good example of a guy like that panning out is Jay Ratliff, from when Wade was the Dallas head coach (2007-2010). Before Wade Ratliff was this 7th round DE who had not done much. Under Wade he was a well-regarded NT on a D that ranked top 10 all 4 years Wade was there. So it happens in the NFL. Low picks at NT (or guard, or center) succeed all the time in the NFL.
