A lot of work, and it's appreciated. Interesting results (btw in a similar argument I too concluded that it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, which means that teams with BOTH high-paid qbs and those without make it. So I agree with your conclusions.)
However, myself, I wouldn;t make it top 5 paid qbs. For one thing that can be arbitrary--it changes by the year, since 2nd contract numbers go up every year. A guy who was top 5 when signing a 2nd contract in 2015 might not be top 5 by 2017.
I would just make it any qb whose contract is at least 12% of a team's cap. I base that just on looking at the contracts of franchise qbs who have been paid big contracts over the last few years, and the normal amount, whether it's a 2nd contract or a 3rd or 4th contract for a star, is at least 12% of the cap. It can go up to 16%.
So for example, in 2016, Roethlisberger was in the championship game, and at the time, his contract (24 M that year) was 15.5% of the cap. He's on your list for 2016 though so that's not new.
