Say what you want...
I, personally believe that Blake may be our QB in 2 years and JG may be gone. Teams cannot sink 25% or more into a QB and remain competitive.
I'm gonna get hammered for this, but we'll check back in 2021 and see.
PS... I'm not against Goff. I love the kid. But I think the concept of paying too much cap to QBs is changing.
A Goff extension in the 30 M range would not be 25% of the cap. By the time he is signed it would be between 13-16% of the cap.
In 2019, that's around 23-31+ M. Here are some of the teams with qbs who take up that much or nearly that much of the cap in 2019.
Brady, New England
Rodgers, Green Bay
Wilson, Seattle
Brees, New Orleans
Roethlisberger, Pitt
Rivers, SD
Luck, IND
Those teams were a combined 71-39-2 last year.
And even if your scenario worked out, and Goff left and Bortles could replace him, Bortles would under those conditions either (1) get a contract in the same range since he would be the starter, or (2) not be good enough to get a contract like that which would be an actual real problem.
