Pat Kirwan has frequently talked about how teams look at a backup QB: Could he give you a chance to win at least 2 out of 4 games in a short stretch?
If you're starter is out most of the year, you're finished (the Foles example is a fluke)
Mannion hasn't even proved he can play in the league yet....he's shown basically nothing promising in 4 years.
Bortles has started 74 NFL games.
At this point, there's no question that Bortles gives the Rams a better chance to win a few games in a short stretch. It's not even close.
That's all that matters.
There's no long term considerations here. Bortles will be gone next year, Mannion will likely be out of the league....maybe even this year.
The Rams are a win now team, just like last year. Bortles is the best option available to achieve that goal.
