I agree. Most of those create larger holes along the way. One step forward, two steps back.
I just don't see a need to make any moves like that right now. They are in a phase where they are waiting for phase two of free agency to kick in and asking prices to go down. And rightfully so. As much as we all tell ourself the spending in the opening 48 hours of free agency is insanity- and it is, 80% of the deals you read about teams will regret later- we all secretly long to see the Rams come up on the bottom scroll bar on ESPN or NFL Network.
Maybe they do get to a place where restructuring someone would be useful. But not right now. I sit back and think and, in my opinion, what are the Rams in the market for right now (pre-draft)? A rotational DL. Another edge rusher if the price is right. A 3rd ILB. A veteran swing backup OL. A backup QB. They don't have to panic and free up cash to do any of those things. Not right now.
I would rather hold the line, keeping the 2020 cap as clean as possible. Plus as of now they have nine 2020 draft picks- all their own plus two extra 4ths. The cost of setting yourself up for long-term success is partly letting some of the guys you drafted step up and play and see if they can shine. Some will. Some won't.
