When you consider that the price was really a 2nd minus a 3rd this year, it was well worth it.

If someone offered to swap picks where we go from 47 to 79 in exchange for making the playoffs and establishing a new winning culture and mindset, I'd do that every time.

We're actually not losing a pick at all; it's just one round back.

I believe they would have become a winning team in 2016 anyway, playoffs or no playoffs. They had the players already to do that. They had the coach to do that.

I think a 2nd round pick would have served them better establishing a longterm winning team.

As you know I also dislike the word "culture" because I think it;s this hyped up mystification as a word, that is in terms of how it's used to discuss the NFL, and means anything anyone wants it to mean. Whatever gets a team to be confident and playing well--including the fact that it has a lot of young talent in place already--well, whatever that is, it's probably several things and there are accordingly several much more accurate words to use for it.

If I asked you to list several synonyms for the word "culture" I would probably agree with a lot of them. And I would say, let's use THOSE words instead.

But the word "culture" to me is just voodoo magic thinking.

I know your feelings on the word culture. I actually partially threw in the word "mindset" with that in mind. We could also describe it as a winning attitude that only comes from actually winning. Different players have spoken of a greater confidence that comes from realizing that they could be a winning / playoff team.

I don't get caught up on the terms. No matter what we want to call it, I believe that actually winning - having a degree of success - was vitally important to the team developing into a winner. IMO, it was the first thing that needed to be done for them to take the step towards being a long term winning team.

As for whether the 2nd round pick would have served them better, I'd say that's very possible. However, keep in mind that Snead has done very well with 3rd round picks. In fact, I think a strong argument could be made that he's MORE successful with 3rd rounders than he has been with 2nd rounders.

IOW, we're probably not losing much in caliber of player by going down 30 picks or so.

Okay we agree on confidence, and higher expectations. Sounds like psychology though, not culture. Anyway I think it's true that when a team expects to win, it finds a way.

I agree on the Snead 3rd round picks.

I think, though, they would have won in 2016 without Watkins. If I may be snide, I think that often they DID win without Watkins. Not that he wasn't on the field.
