Perhaps all his wrinkles were against a man defense assuming NE had always been in man. It is possible that the new plays were determined by McVay to not work against zone so he scrapped them.
Perhaps the wrinkles relied on establishing the run and play action first and that never happened.
Perhaps the wrinkles needed Goff to have more than 2 seconds to throw.
Perhaps Gurley was a key factor in the wrinkles and then he mysteriously could not play again.
I do not know what happened, so I can't assume there was nothing prepared.
On another note, I do remember when they ran the screen play to Cooks. I remember saying to myself "finally something different" and was hoping they were starting to pull out the new stuff, but alas that did not happen.
