Rodger Saffold is going to get PAID! So many teams with young QB's, poor OL and PLENTY of cash!
We can forget getting the hometown discount....if Jeremiah is reading the situation correctly....Saffold is likely gone.
Saffold of course is not up for a 2nd contract. His market is different from the 2nd contract market.
There are a number of well-regarded guards in the NFL who are way past 2nd contracts and continue to play well. That's guys like Yanda, Boling, Sitton, Iupati, and Lang. They don't draw the top money, which goes to younger 2nd contract guys.
It may be that someone pursues RS avidly and offers him top contract money for the position but that's not a common thing for what will be a vet in his 10th year.
My guess right now is that reasonable money for RS, as a 10 year vet looking for a 3rd contract, will be around 8-9 M. In 2017 Detroit paid 9.5 M for TJ Lang, and he was drafted the year before Saffold. Maybe it could go that high.
2nd contract guys in 2017-2018, in contrast, were getting around 12-14 M. But the 2nd contract market does not determine things for vets who are past their 2nd contract. 3rd contracts and beyond can sometimes be higher than the 2nd contract market (though generally that's not true of guards) but it's usually lower. You're buying an older vet, not a guy in his prime.
