After reading this
LA Times piece by Gary Klein I was playing around the with the free agency calculator over on
OverTheCap.com here's what I did:
Released:
Barron
Sullivan
T. Smart
RFA/ERFA tenders:
Littleton (I went at the 2nd round level- could lose him otherwise)
Countess
Natson
M. Brown
Extended:
Fowler (1 year/$8M)
Saffold (3 yrs/$35M)
That puts the Rams about $14.9M under the cap. Estimated rookie draft pool $5.6M which cuts that to $8.3M. That's not a lot of money for free agency, but they also don't really need it. They can afford 2-3 mid-tier free agents (OLB Shaquil Barrett from Denver?). Maybe Saffold costs less. Can also of course restructure someone's deal to free up a few million more.
Nice work, 93.
I know that 10 different posters are probably gonna have 10 different opinions. But, fwiw, here’s mine.
I’m not a big Natson fan. Salary isn’t a biggie, anyway, but still...
I think you might be a bit optimistic on Fowler’s cost, but I do think we can (and must) sign Saffold for less on his 3rd contract. Say around 3 years for $28-30 million? Otherwise, I think Saffold prices himself out of range for the Rams.
Other questions:
The backup QB position.
The Brown or CJ decision
Who replaces Suh?
Ebu’s replacement
Must Brockers be sacrificed on the cap altar? It’s possible.
Joyner’s replacement gonna be a FA or a draft pick?
Gonna be tricky for S&M this offseason, no doubt. Lot of “holes” and decisions to be addressed with limited cap and draft resources. Possibly 4 among our front 7 alone. But these two have done stellar work in both areas during the previous 2 offseasons, to say the least. Why should we expect less now?
