If Joyner, Fowler, Barron and Suh are gone. Not too far fetched, and if I gave odds, I would set Fowler's at the best to return.
So that leaves a hole at S, ILB, DT and Edge
I think there are 3 S in the draft that can start right away and you are going to need to draft them in round 1 to get 1.
I think there are 3 ILBers in the draft that can start at any point and you will need to grab one by the middle of round 2.
There are Edge guys that could rotate with who we have all over the draft.
DT is not nearly as deep as it was due to some drug suspensions (Lawrence) and a couple of guys going back to school. But you can grab a run plugger all thru the draft.
The 3 S:
Nasir Adderley - an FCS kid, but a stud.
Deionte Thompson - A rough NCG hasn't moved me off him.
Chauncey Gardener-johnson - I think he could be had early to middle 1st. But he can line up everywhere on the field.
The 3 ILBers:
Devin White - outside a trade up, he is long gone
Mack Wilson - Another ALabama guy and the best cover backer in the draft and a smart ILBer in run support.
Devin Bush - a 2nd rounder I think, an undersized sideline to sideline missile.
I am leaning towards Wilson or Adderley/Thompson right now. (that will change) unless one of a few guys drop:
Christian Wilkins - a perfect pairing with AD on the D line
Montez Sweat - a long, angular edge rusher with a "first guy of the bus" body.
I posted the research on all of Wade's draft picks since 2004 and predicted that we would not draft an ILB with a premium pick. It probably won't happen this year either.
Here's how Wade has drafted over the years (includes 2018 now):
Wade Phillips Draft Pick Positions from 2004 - 2018
DT - 3 premium, 9 total (all premium DTs played DE for Wade; only 1 NT drafted and he was pick #234)
DE - 3 premium, 10 total
OLB - 5 premium, 11 total
ILB - 2 premium, 4 total (no 1st; earliest pick was Sean Lee at #55)
CB - 3 premium, 12 total
S - 3 premium, 9 total (no 1st; earliest DJ Swearinger at #57)
That's 57 total draft picks and only 4 ILB's drafted and none who were 1st round picks.
So caution: if you're getting your hopes up for 1st round ILB, don't!!
And the same should be said for safeties.
