Even if they COULD do that, why would they target one helmet and not the other? All he does is switch helmets and then there's no issue.
They know for sure he would use a back-up's helmet because THEY'RE NOT STUPID. It's the obvious thing to do under the circumstances and what they themselves would do if they lost communications in just ONE helmet.
