and Bulger is looooong gone
Bulger is 41...he came into the NFL in 2001 and played 10 seasons....of course he's long gone.
Taking Ryan looks obvious now, of course....but what front office would take a QB at #2 after investing $62 million in a veteran QB just a year earlier?
Answer: No Front Office...they would look like fools.
You have to consider the facts at the time, beyond the 20/20 hindsight that we all have.
The team that really screwed up was the Dolphins.....their 2007 QBs were Cleo Lemon, Trent Green, and John Beck.
They still passed on Ryan....instead they signed Chad Pennington after he was released from the Jets in Aug 2008.
The Dolphins are still looking for at quality QB....passing on Ryan has haunted them for 10 years.
Small correction. Bulger was drafted in 2000. You're right, Ryan is 8 years younger than Bulger.
And...even setting that aside, Ryan has never had a season with the kind of absolute over the top OL devastation MB had to contend with for 3 straight years (2007-9). If the Rams had drafted Ryan in 2008 for some reason, it would have taken him to 2010 before he had a stable OL that wasn't suffering from extensive multiple injuries. And of course, there's also the fact that the Rams only decent receiver in those years (2008 & 2009) was Holt, who had knee issues and was in his final, worn-down years. Their leading receiver in 2009 was Donnie Avery with 47. There was also a bit of a young Amendola...compared to the Falcons in 2008, who had a top line and Roddy White.
On offense, all the Falcons needed in 2008 was a qb.
The Rams, in contrast, needed everything else (except RB ).
