Rampage2K-
He's been saying this for a while now.

McVay is going to be the gold standard and teams are gonna be constantly trying to find the next McVay

We are so blessed to have landed this guy....... and so deserving after going through such dark times.

If Cowherd was saying that the gold standard is a one year turnaround, then that was a complete delusion on his part.

No one turns a team around overnight unless there is already sufficient talent on hand. In this case that included a pro bowl qb, DROY and then DPOY, and an OROY and then OPOY. But that wasn't even all. McV and Snead added players but that was not an overnight complete rebuild. Which is why when they were doing the coaching search in 2017 Demoff openly said this is not a rebuild.

McVay is a great hire but I don't know what "hiring the next McVay" means. Hire a good coach? Maybe more narrowly, make your next head coach an offensive coach? If it only means that then people already knew it. The trick is just finding the guy.

But the "overnight turnaround" thing is a complete myth on Cowherd's part and makes me wonder if his views get much past the shallow end. No coach does that without inheriting a lot of top talent. Can you think of any exceptions?

....

You’re right Demoff said it wasn’t a rebuild. He also said it was an organizational fail.

So what did they change to fix the organization?

One thing. They dumped Fisher. And replaced him with better coaching.

They kept Snead. They kept Demoff. They kept Pastoors. They kept Reggie.

They replace Fisher with a vastly superior HC who wisely brought a superior DC with him. They kept all the best players, and dumped Fishers knuckle head players.

I am challenging Cowherd's (wrongheaded) idea that you can expect an overnight turnaround with the right coaching hire.

My point is simple. And it's universal in league history and goes way beyond McVay. That simple point is that no, if you have an overnight turnaround it's because the coach, no matter who it is, had top inherited talent.

Yet I keep get all these responses that address everything BUT that point. You seem to think this is a discussion about 2012-2016. You can have that discussion if you want but it has absolutely nothing to do with what I am saying. That's not a discussion I am in.

In fact I don't get, frankly, why so many people are off topic, yet seem to think they're debating the point that was made. It's confusing.

The real debate would be to try and come up with any examples of any coaches who ever had an overnight turnaround and DIDN'T inherit top talent.

It's as I said "for breakfast I will have coffee and toast" and your response is "the dinner menu does not include Irish meade." To which I can only go "uh, what?...hunh? (?)...."

My only point about Demoff is that he was right, the 2017 team was not a rebuild. He said that because it was true. That was the only thing I was addressing, and it had to do with the argument that the right hire gives you an overnight turnaround. Again. No. It doesn't. As league history shows, that only happens when you have BOTH the right coach hire AND inherited top talent.

So nothing you say here has anything remotely to do with what I was stating.

But as long as you changed the subject, if he was actually right about it being an organizational fail, he was negligent to keep Snead in place. Well...he was right to keep Snead in place, AND therefore his organizational fail rhetoric just strikes me as nonsense. The not a rebuild stuff, in contrast, is born out by the fact that yes the Rams are thriving at least in part because there WAS top inherited talent on hand. So he was right about that part.

If that sends people rushing into arguments about all sorts of different stuff, that's not on me. I made a simple point and I think it stands.

....

So when Demoff says its not a rebuild he's got it right.

But when he says its an organization fail he's full of nonsense.

Lets be frank. I agree that a lot of pieces were in place for McVay and company. I have no problem with that part, and I've said it many times before in multiple venues. But until you admit that Fisher was indeed the major link to the fail in the organization then you're only half right on your assessment.
