That's an example that comes close and therefore might qualify as an exception because they added Ryan as a rookie plus Turner as a FA RB.

But I don't see it.

When Smith arrived they had their entire OL (they added Baker who didn't even start for the first 8 games) plus Roddy White on offense. The performance of that veteran OL was one of the reasons they did so well in 2008. And on defense they already had half their secondary (including Milloy), 2/3rds of their LBs (Brooking & Boley), and their entire DL (including John Abraham who had his best year in 2008 with 16.5 sacks).

So as I see it they added Ryan and Turner to a veteran offense plus pretty much went with their veteran defense.

In contrast, in 99, when Vermeil started winning, he had 6 players total on the entire roster who were there before he arrived. I mentioned the 2008 Atlanta OL...Vermeil didn't have his OL until 99. They added Timmerman, Nutten, and Pace before things settled in on the OL.

In Seattle, in 2012 when they started winning, they had 3 starters who were there before Carroll arrived, and one was the punter.
