He's been saying this for a while now.

McVay is going to be the gold standard and teams are gonna be constantly trying to find the next McVay

We are so blessed to have landed this guy....... and so deserving after going through such dark times.

beer cheer smiley

If Cowherd was saying that the gold standard is a one year turnaround, then that was a complete delusion on his part.

No one turns a team around overnight unless there is already sufficient talent on hand. In this case that included a pro bowl qb, DROY and then DPOY, and an OROY and then OPOY. But that wasn't even all. McV and Snead added players but that was not an overnight complete rebuild. Which is why when they were doing the coaching search in 2017 Demoff openly said this is not a rebuild.

McVay is a great hire but I don't know what "hiring the next McVay" means. Hire a good coach? Maybe more narrowly, make your next head coach an offensive coach? If it only means that then people already knew it. The trick is just finding the guy.

But the "overnight turnaround" thing is a complete myth on Cowherd's part and makes me wonder if his views get much past the shallow end. No coach does that without inheriting a lot of top talent. Can you think of any exceptions?

....

That's the thing you seemed to miss....McVay took basically the same team Fisher floundered with and went from WORST offense in NFL to BEST offense in NFL.

From doormat to dominating

That's the point.

Team owners see that and think that maybe if they could get just half of that they'd be ahead of the game.

I was not talking about that. It's this and it applies universally all over the NFL in all years. No coach, no matter how good, pulls off an overnight turnaround without inheriting a lot of talent.

THEREFORE, if Cowherd believes McVay in of himself means an overnight turnaround, he's just deluded. I promise you, no NFL execs in charge of hiring are going to think McVay means overnight turnarounds are possible without inherited talent. I promise you to a man they all know better.

The counter-argument is not to try and dredge up Fisher wars. That has nothing to do with what I am saying. It's to name an example of an overnight turnaround where the first year coach did NOT inherit a lot of talent.

You can look for examples of that if you want but I suggest not bothering---any example would be so rare as to be a negligible exception.

...

Better yet, name me an overnight turnaround in the likes of what McVay pulled off ???

It just doesn't happen very often and it had more to do with McVay than the talent he inherited.... even Brockers admitted recently that they'd still be a 7-9 team with Fisher here. McVay has brought not only innovation he's brought inspiration

This has nothing to do with whether someone understands McV is a top coach. No one is arguing about that. Of course it doesn't happen very often, but it has happened, and every time it does, the team in question was stocked with top inherited talent.

But you want overnight turnarounds? Okay. Here's some. Cause we do know, right? that McVay is not the only great coach in all NFL history.

One example that comes immediately to mind. In 2011 Harbaugh inherited a 6-10 team that was loaded with defensive talent and went 13-3 and made it to the conference championship.

In 2006 Payton took over the 3-13 Saints and went 10-6 and made it to the conference championship game.

Or a classic. In 1970 Don Shula took over the 3-10-1 Dolphins and went 10-4. You want a list of the guys already on the roster?

Those are just a few.

Other great coaches such as Gibbs, Noll, Bellichick, Landry, etc. had to rebuild so they did not have the overnight turnaround. Same with Vermeil.

We all love the Rams and no one is against McV but it pays to have realistic views of things, too.

...

What do all of those coaches have in common?

They're all great coaches.

That's the point. Teams see what McVay has done with an underachieving team and want to try and emulate that.

i dont think any owner expects the kinda turnaround McVay pulled off, but they'd like to see some innovation, inspiration and improvement....

McVay will be the trendsetter. I can see teams going with young energetic types like McVay and hope to catch the lightning in a bottle the Rams seem to have captured

I think you think you're arguing with someone who (you think) is saying McV is not a great coach.

Well, you're not.

You're arguing with someone who says that no coach, not even a great one, turns a team around overnight without having a lot of top inherited talent on hand.

(Unless you think Noll, Walsh, Bellichick etc are not great coaches.)

Therefore, I am challenging Cowherd's assertion that McV proves that you can expect overnight turnarounds with the right hire.

No you can't. Not unless they have top inherited talent on hand.

That's my only point. It's based on league history. There's honestly no other real conclusion. Many great coaches had to rebuild and therefore took a couple of years to turn things around. The great coaches who did do an overnight turnaround had inherited talent.

That's all. Saying that takes nothing away from McV. If you think it does, then you misunderstand what I am saying.
