Deferring is the way to go! The biggest benefit is the possibility to "double dip" - score a TD right before half and then scoring again on first possession of second half. Conceivably, a team can score 14 pts before the opposition ever gets the ball back. To me, that is way more beneficial than scoring on an opening possession of a 60 minute game.
