I agree it has been good for them but at the same time you have to balance the higher priced veterans with younger blue chip talent on rookie deals.
Assuming the Rams have the 29th through 32nd overall pick I would keep it. Lots of ways they can go to bolster the team long term and have someone for five years.
If they want to deal one of the three late 3rds they will have or a day 3 pick for a quality veteran then I am all for it.
Yes. Exactly right. Just reiterating to drive the point home. The mantra here is that you only get so many big contracts. Each one you add to your list knocks someone off.
The problem with trading for players is that they come in closer to the 4/5 year deadline where you have to extend them. That's what happened with Cooks.
In contrast, you get a low first round pick for 4 to 5 years at bargain rates. So if they are going to have huge cap numbers in 2021 because of Goff and Donald, they need to use their 1st round picks to actually draft talent that does not immediately represent another big cap hit.
Lower 1st round picks under the rookie cap come in at around 2-3 M, which means they are bargains.
If you have a good team and can pick well, you get a lot out of a nice safe, ready to play lower first rounder. They have first round talent and you are paying bargain prices.
So yes you nailed it.
