On this particular play the results were negative. But overall, his aggressive style has been extremely effective, to say the least.
Gotta push back here a bit.
The question for BOTH McV and Goff is not about having an aggressive style.
The question is about balance and judgment. Aggression in general is a very good thing, if it is based in competitive strength. Our offense IS STRONG, and it is RIGHT to turn to it aggressively. Against SEA, for example, it made a ton of sense to put the game in the hands of that superb OL rather than ask the D to stop R W. Had it failed and we lost, I would have been willing to write about all the reasons it was the right call.
But in a league as closely competitive as the NFL, aggressiveness cannot long prevail on its own. It has to be balanced by prudent regard for the situation. This was a call that "impatiently" (McV's own term used of himself) reached for aggression when it was the sucker bet.
Obviously, these are always judgment calls and people will disagree. It is actually very possible to go wrong either way.
I am glad that McV shares the view of those on the board who say he needs to learn some judgment in certain situations. HE SAYS THAT! And I think he is right.
My biggest request would be that no one say to those of us who share that view that we are questioning his aggressive orientation. It isn't that.
