Your comment looks at the execution. It does not consider the decision.
Remember--the score was 20-3 with, what, 10:00 or so left. They had just wasted some time on a multiple play drive that came up empty. Their clock window of opportunity for climbing back into the game was very tight. And their offense was frustrated by ineffectiveness for over 3 quarters.
A running play and punt would be fine. They'd be starting over yet again in front of a depressed home crowd with very little time for drives of more than a few plays. Making them drive the length of the field again and wind the clock down even further.
What you CANNOT do is give them the ball back on a short field inviting a quick score. You saw what happened: a quick TD, a reinvigorated team and crowd, and time to come back and win.
A pass should NOT have been called.
If it were called, J G should NOT have tried to fit a ball into a tight window. Wrong time and field position to do that.
The most important part of a play is the tactical decision. This was a bad decision by McV and a poor throwing decision by J G. A sack would have been better.
