I think part of our latest contretemps on the board is differing expectations.
I've been thinking about that and I've decided that part of the reason I'm not as unhappy about certain developments/decisions/game events as some of the other fans is because I really don't expect the Rams to win a Superbowl this year.
As big a Goff fan as I am, I think he still needs polishing and growth. He's elite in some ways but definitely not in some other ways - YET.
I think he needs to see more pressure and adversity in various ways before he'll handle it like a seasoned pro.
That's not a knock on him. He'll get there. But there will still be games like yesterday, or like the playoff game of last year.
And maybe even McVay isn't really ready this year to win a championship either.
When the Rams put this defense together in the offseason, I envisioned something quite different than the one I see on the field.
I thought it would be a defense that really pressured an offense and forced a lot of mistakes.
It isn't. Maybe some of what Wade does is effective. But teams don't fear this defense much at all.
It doesn't create turnovers. It just tries to limit the damage.
So I see all that and I have lowered expectations about where this 2018 journey is going to end. I think they will have a great season, and get further into the playoffs than they did last year, but I do not EXPECT that they will win the Superbowl, if they even make it there.
Because I see this season as just another step forward, I'm finding it easier to accept imperfection. Game time has not been stressful for me. Most of the time they're going to win. I can't do anything about it if they're not. So it's fine. I just watch the action, and let things work out.
Now all of that is not to say that I think a championship is impossible. It's possible. Things could break the right way for LA, and they could catch a hot streak at just the right time.
But simple math tells me that it's not likely. The odds are well below 50% as I figure it.
YMMV.
I give the Rams as good a chance as anyone and a better chance than most right now.
As of now, reason to believe all the key pieces, including Talib and Zuerlein, will be back and very much in game shape by playoff time. That'll be a HUGE plus for the kicking game. Special teams and offense will be as good or better than anybody. And I wholly believe the defense will be much improved by season's end. Reason to believe Rams will have home field advantage and the Super Bowl is in Atlanta - warm weather city.
Yep, I like the Rams' chances as much more more than anyone else's.
