Yeah, I see what you are saying. It is hard to critique not running enough when they called 35 runs and 35 passes (not counting the final two kneel downs). There were a couple head scratching calls to me. One to me being the 3rd down pass from the Denver 19 where Goff was sacked and Santos then missed from 47.
I put more than a few of the sacks yesterday on Goff more than the play call. I don't blame McVay for a calling a pass in those situations at all. Running on third and long is what I've HATED about so many Rams teams over the years. From Knox to Robinson to Fisher. Screw that. What I do criticize is Goff not getting rid of the ball and avoiding the sack. I don't recall him being in a situation where he just couldn't get rid of it. It's good that he wanted to make a play and tried to let it develop but it's something he needs to work on. It comes with experience and he hasn't had to deal with much pressure since McVay took over so I'm not too concerned about it but Goff holding the ball too long throughout the game yesterday stood out to me.
And, as you say, had he not taken the sack, Santos probably makes the shorter FG attempt. Which would have changed the late game situation, etc.
